Do I Really need Travel Insurance?

I never purchased travel insurance before, as losing the cost of a trip—while unfortunate—didn’t feel catastrophic. I was also pretty sure my normal medical insurance would cover me abroad. However, after learning more about medical evacuation coverage, I realized how significant the financial risk can be. I recently came across this video highlighting that medical evacuations—often required after unexpected injuries or emergencies—can cost $50,000–$100,000 or more, even for young and otherwise healthy travelers. Situations can be as simple as an injury that prevents returning home on a commercial flight, like a broken leg in a cast.

After I started looking, I found many other articles and videos about this type of situation, too. I researched several options and decided on Medjet Horizon, which provides medical evacuation coverage as well as crisis evacuation (including events such as civil unrest, natural disasters, or other emergencies). I enrolled in an annual family plan, which covers both my husband and I, which covers all trips more than 150 miles from home. We can provide memberships to Medjet as well as Trip Cancellation coverage as well.
